Education
Parents as Teachers
The United Way Parents as Teachers program is a free, evidence-based program that supports parents and caregivers of children between the ages of 0 and 5 in becoming their child’s first and best teacher. Parent Educators conduct home visits focused on providing parents with guidance about child development through educational and fun activities. The program focuses on ensuring children meet important developmental milestones to improve school readiness. Participants also gain access to a supportive network, unique events, resources and more. The PAT program is a part of the HOPES collaborative led by El Paso Center for Children and partly supported by AmeriCorps service members as a part of a OneStar Foundation grant.

Borderland Out-of-School Time Network (BOOST)

The goal of the Healthy Kids Initiative is to improve a range of health outcomes by engaging disconnected youth in the Paso del Norte region in high quality out-of-school time programs. United Way serves as an intermediary and convenes programs and partners through the BOOST Network. The network is made up of program providers from organizations committed to improving out-of-school and afterschool programs.

Grade-Level Reading Initiative: Book Nook
Our United Way, through our Grade-Level Reading Initiative, partnered with Sunland Park Mall to open the Book Nook—a place for children and their families to gather and read, complete activities, and spend quality time together. On the first Fridays of every month, our Parents as Teachers program will host special events, arts and crafts, and other activities to help parents engage with their children.
Health
SingleCare
United Way partners with SingleCare to help El Pasoans throughout the community save on their prescription medications. SingleCare’s prescription savings card program can help reduce the cost of prescriptions regardless if the individual is insured or uninsured, helping them to obtain medications that may have otherwise been too expensive to purchase.

Financial Stability
The Caring Homes Initiative supports small, minority-owned home-based childcare businesses by building capacity, creating bridges between young families and childcare resources, and fostering more resilient and successful El Paso families. Business owners enrolled in the program work to obtain the proper licensing and certifications needed to succeed, create goals, and develop their financial and digital literacy skills. Valuable benchmarks and progress reports help ensure business owners find success through the program.
Engagement
VolunteerElPaso is an online database that connects El Pasoans looking to volunteer with opportunities and needs throughout the community. In recent years, the database has helped build the capacity of local food banks, organizations, and shelters to support them with COVID-19 efforts, migrant services, and other critical response efforts. VolunteerElPaso.org serves as the bridge between individuals looking to contribute to the community and organizations in need of volunteer support.
Engagement
The REALIZE Board Training Program prepares future or current board members throughout the community to successfully lead a nonprofit board. The program is comprised of courses focused on helping board members learn about financial documents, facilitating dialogue between board members, working with CEOs, and more. This includes the Lunch & Learn series, which offers a four-course curriculum, broken down into modules, to help support professionals better serve on nonprofit boards. In addition, members of our Young Leaders Society have the opportunity to participate in the REALIZE by YLS cohort, a four-course training program to help them learn more about serving on nonprofit boards and make connections with local nonprofits. The REALIZE Board Training Program is provided by the Paso del Norte Health Foundation in collaboration with United Way.
